4th gen 4runner V6 or V8 for off road?

would a 4th gen 4runner be better equipped off road with the 4.0 L V6 or 4.6 L V8? I understand the V8 seems like the obvious answer but from what I understand, the V8 was more directed toward towing. Does the V6 have any additional off road features such as a locker or do both engine's have the same features?
