Why can't I go past a certain point in the splits?

I've been stretching for the straddle split (one leg on each side) for about four or five months now. At first, the progress went really fast but all of a sudden I can't get past a certain point! I'm about 7 inches off the ground and can't go anymore. Also, what's a good stretch for front splits? Thanks in advance! :)
